Therapeutic Approaches

My work with clients incorporates elements from a variety of approaches.  I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and many aspects of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) in my practice.  When I resume seeing clients in person, I will again offer Neuro Emotional Technique (NET).

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

CBT techniques are used to assist clients in uncovering and examining their thoughts and changing their behaviors.  These include identifying automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions, utilizing better cognitive management, modeling, assertiveness training, and social skills training.  Relaxation methods such as breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery as also used.  The effectiveness of CBT is well-documented.

NEURO EMOTIONAL TECHNIQUE (NET)

Note:  It is not possible to utilize the full NET procedure in a virtual session, however beneficial elements of NET may be utilized.

Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is a mind-body technique that uses a methodology of finding and removing neurological imbalances related to the physiology of unresolved stress.  I have found NET to be very useful in getting to the roots of a client’s issue quickly.  I’ve had a number of clients who had previous psychotherapy and gained lots of insight, but still felt stuck.  After experiencing NET, clients walk away with a deeper understanding of their current situation and how to take charge of their life moving forward.

It is useful to think of emotions as natural and normal.  We humans feel them and process through them --- only sometimes we don’t process through them and they become stuck physiologically. Science has shown that there is a physiology to emotions. In NET, the meridian system (the system used in Chinese acupuncture) is utilized to identify stuck emotional patterns and release them physiologically.  A goal of NET is to assist the client in becoming congruent or ‘okay’ with some aspect of an issue the client has been struggling with.

In an NET session, I use muscle testing, body reflex points and semantic reactions to assist and guide clients to recall the specific negative emotion and event. While the client holds the past event in their mind, they are re-engaging the original physiology associated with the event.  At the same time, acupressure points on the wrist and forehead are held (by the client) and the body is then free to regain physiological and emotional balance.  The origins of emotional blocks can be identified and layers of chronic or recurrent problems can often be resolved quickly and gently!
